![]() ![]() Created in 2009, the WDL contains collections of materials that include cultural objects, historical documents, books, maps, and other treasures from nearly 200 countries. The US Library of Congress’s World Digital Library (WDL) is an example of a digitized archive which is free for public access. This includes photographs, written records, microfilm, video, analog recordings, print media, maps, and anything you may have stuffed in a physical file cabinet over the years. What is digitization of records?ĭigitization is the process of making non-digital information accessible in digital format. But content comes in many forms and one of the most effective, high-quality, and impactful types of content is something you may already have in filing cabinets, hard drives, and stacked in shelves throughout your organization-digital historic archives, records, and collections of analog documents that can be digitized and posted to your website. We are almost there.Īfter 5 years, and after a tremendous work of multiple teams, we feel that our journey in our second century has just begun. Our digital initiatives partner, Nyansa, worked in 3 shifts everyday from 6 AM to 12 AM, and completed the scanning of more than 7 million pages in 2 years’ time. Step 5 - Non-destructive scanning (page-by-page) of almost 16,000 books. ![]() They donated 2 more book-scanners, and also sponsored the digitisation process and our move to “Digitalaya” platform developed by C-DAC. Step 4 - Yardi Softwares sponsors the whole initiatve - Yardi Softwares then facilitated the entire implementation of the project. We are eternally grateful to Ajmera group for helping us buy the first bookscanner. Step 3 - Establishment of the Digitisation Lab. Based on this, close to 16,000 books were selected. Step 2 - The books were screened as per 3 parameters: their availability online, copyrights, and academic significance for the field. It is available on the intranet for the visitors of our library. ![]() We carried out data entry of all books as per Marc-21 standard. We realised that the paradigm of knowledge generation and consumption was shifting It includes many collections of rare books on topics such as Vedas, Ayurveda, Buddhism, Jainism, Sanskrit and its Grammar, Ancient Indian Philosophies and Kamashastra to name a few.Īs the institute approached its centenary year (2017), we recognised the need to evolve in a new direction. ![]() Let us tell you a story of how we digitised 7,500,000 pages of almost 16,000 rare books at to create one of the first world-class Indian digital library of rare books.Įstablished in 1917, Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute is home to more than 153,000 rare books and 28,000 thousand manuscripts. ![]()
